Message	I applaud the record of the TTC in making all best efforts to acquire the transit vehicles needed to maintain the Toronto Transit system as one of the best in the world. I understand that the TTC is well along in a process of negotiating the purchase of new subway cars from the Canadian manufacturer Bombardier. I've read that this negotiated process is common practice among transit systems world wide - and is designed to ensure the best product and the best price for the transit agency - all without attracting the risks and delays of introducing untested solutions or suppliers into major systems. I am further pleased to see Canada's largest city supporting the local and provincial economy by working with an Ontario car builder. The Bombardier plant in Thunder Bay is a world class facility which has built more than 3,000 rail cars in the past 43 years. The TTC contract will contribute to developing 2,485 direct and indirect jobs over 4.5 to 5 years. These positions represent an opportunity to retain skilled labour and expertise within Ontario - and secure the future of innovation in Ontario. Provincial and federal taxpayers subsidize the Toronto transit infrastructure. I believe that our tax dollars should be kept in Canada wherever possible, to invest in our country, our province and our community. The outside suppliers required to fulfill the contract will lead to over $50m worth of supplier contracts from Ontario alone and generate substantial increased tax revenue - with an estimated $136m in wages and salaries plus $13m in taxable benefits, the province stands to gain an additional $51m in Ontario income taxes and Ontario Retail Sales Tax. Why would we want to showcase cars built in China or anywhere else, when we can make a competitive product right here at home and enjoy the economic multiplier? I have full confidence in the integrity of the TTC's rigorous process to secure a fair and competitive price for the new subway cars. At this time TTC and the vendor are involved in a process of a pricing negotiation for a list of desired specifications. Once completed, the negotiated procurement will be reviewed by an independent, third party auditor who will benchmark it against global procurement contracts. They will validate the price negotiated and confirm that it represents good value for Toronto.
